Density Labs - Details

Learners spent over a week working in our STEM labs at the 2-8 building working on finding the mass, volume, and density of various materials.

Below is a summary of a few of the labs:

Density Cubes:

Learners measured and reported the density of 10 different materials in kits such as the one pictured below.

Watch as two of our learners work through this lab early on in the rotations

Colored Density Rods

Learners worked with various cylinders to determine their mass using 2 different methods to find the volume of the cylinder:

Formula Method - using the formula below, they calculated the volume and density of the cylinder

Water Displacement Method - they also used the water displacement method to find the volume of each cylinder

Reporting - Learners reported out their findings using the lab sheet below. Please note that in this particular case, I solved part of the mathematical formula for them!

Floating Canisters

Learners used old film canisters to explore which densities float and which sink. By filling each canister with various materials, learners were able to change the density of the canister and discover what sunk and what floated.

Equal Mass Rods

As learners explored the cylinders pictures above...they "discovered" something really cool.

Each of the rods had the same mass! This allowed us to talk about how density effects the mass of a material.
